6 hours of sci-fi cult on TV: tonight you can watch one of the most legendary trilogies in one go

There aren’t many, but they do exist: these film series that everyone knows. Whether you are old or young, have a cinema subscription or don’t like movies: ‘Star Wars’, ‘Indiana Jones’ or ‘The Lord of the Rings’, for example, are so incredibly popular that you can hardly ignore them. ‘Back to the Future’ is also one of those pop culture phenomena that everyone should see at least once in their life. And for anyone who has Marty McFly’s time-travel adventure on their watchlist (whether they’ve never seen it or have seen it a hundred times) there’s now some really good news:

Back to the future“, “Back to the Future II” And “Back to the future III“ will be shown back-to-back on TV on January 5, 2024 – from 8:15 PM on ZDFneo. For anyone who does not want to spend half the night there, there are several alternatives: The trilogy is currently available particularly cheaply on 4K Blu-ray* – and is also included, for example, in various streaming subscriptions RTL+* or Amazon Prime Video:

‘Back to the Future’, on the other hand, does not have to hide from the competition even after more than 35 years. Many films have now been made that also skillfully play with the concept of time and time travel – from ‘Looper’ and ‘Edge Of Tomorrow’ to ‘Déjà Vu’ and ‘Tenet’. However, nowhere is it as charming and light-hearted as when master director Robert Zemeckis sends his chaotic duo Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) through time.

“Back to the Future”: still as good today as it was then – right?

At this point, we won’t go into detail again about why it takes exactly 1.21 gigawatts to jump through time, why Marty McFly is actually Calvin Klein, and why you should definitely skip sports betting. For anyone who has absolutely nothing to do with this potpourri of information, here’s the trailer for the oft-quoted cult classic. Take a look, be enchanted and check out the rest on Amazon.

If you already know “Back to the Future” inside and out and don’t feel like making yet another trip to Hill Valley, the discussion about whether the films are still as brilliant today as they were then might pique your interest. In the FILMSTARTS podcast Canvas Love, presenter Sebastian, Yves from Moviepilot and our former editor Tobias talk about whether ‘Back to the Future’ actually stands the test of time. And the answer isn’t as clear as you might think…

However, for the author of this article, there are no two opinions in this case. Although he never liked “Star Wars” and only came to love “Indiana Jones” and “The Lord of the Rings” after seeing them several times, “Back to the Future” is for him one of the ultimate blockbusters -classics that always come back again and again. – and deserve a special place in the home cinema, true to the motto “More is more!”:
