A suitable Christmas gift? The two popular initiatives Yes to the import ban on cruelly produced fur products (Fur Initiative) and Yes to the import ban on foie gras (Foie Gras Initiative) emerge. They will be submitted in Bern next Thursday, December 28. The initiative committee announced this at the request of Blick.

The Alliance Animale Suisse, a network of the organizations Animal Trust, Association Animal Équité and Wildlife Protection Switzerland, managed to collect more than 100,000 votes for both initiatives. In both cases, Parliament must issue the implementing regulations no later than two years after the adoption of the initiative.

The import of fur and foie gras should be banned

The Foie Gras Initiative aims to constitutionally ban the import of foie gras and foie gras products. In Switzerland, stuffing geese and ducks is considered animal cruelty and has been banned for more than 40 years. However, import is still allowed.

According to the initiators, Switzerland imports 200,000 kilos of foie gras every year. To meet this demand, they criticize, 400,000 ducks and 12,000 geese are stuffed and killed every year.
