The technology in the Panama II substation is generating regional interest

Senior managers System of Electrical Connection of Central American Countries (SIEPAC) They visited Panama to get to know the Synchronous-static compensator, (STATCOM) which works at the Panama II substation.

He STATCOM It is part of Electric Transmission Company, SA’s (ETESA) investment in state-of-the-art technology that aims to significantly improve the stability and quality of electricity supply in the region.

SIEPAC executives had the opportunity to witness live demonstrations and receive detailed explanations of the operation and benefits of this innovative technology.

45 million dollars have been invested in new equipment with the most modern technology and a guarantee of efficiency in the energy transition, ETESA director Carlos Mosquera pointed out.

STATCOM teams are installed in Substation Llano Sánchez, province of Coclé and in Substation Panama II, province of Panama.

These are equipment with top technology that uses energy electronic elements such as; power transistors (IGBT), pulse width modulation regulators, voltage source converters in reactive power valves and servers, which are connected to the main busbars of the substation using a power transformer.

STATCOMs make it possible to maintain greater voltage stability of the 230 kV lines of the National Interconnected System (SIN); In addition to very fast injection of blocks of reactive power (capacitive or inductive) between ±120MVAR, or in extreme cases of opening of lines caused by atmospheric discharges, they can provide up to ±156MVAR of reactive power in microseconds.

Mosquera reiterated the importance of continuing to work hand in hand with the SIEPAC team, in order to guarantee reliable and sustainable electricity supply for all countries in the region.

This visit marks a milestone in regional electricity cooperation and underscores the shared commitment to strengthening the electricity infrastructure in the Central American region.

The delegation was composed of representatives of various strategic areas of Croatia SIEPAC, received the technical team led by the general director of ETESA, ing Carlos Mosquera Castillowho leads the development and implementation of STATCOM in Panama, together with the company’s technical team.
