For the negotiations with Switzerland: Brussels adopts the draft mandate

On Wednesday, the European Commission approved its draft mandate for negotiations with Switzerland on an agreement package.

The draft mandate is based on the joint statement developed together with Switzerland over the course of 18 months, the Brussels authority wrote in a statement on Wednesday.

It includes, for example, institutional elements “that enable Switzerland to participate in the internal market”, adjustments to the free movement of people, regular cohesion payments, Swiss participation in EU programs and a transitional agreement that allows Swiss researchers to participate in important calls for proposals, “before negotiations are concluded”, as it goes on to say.

“We end 2023 with encouraging momentum for our bilateral relationship. I look forward to the next steps in 2024,” EU Deputy Commissioner Maros Sevcovioc wrote on X (formerly Twitter). (SDA)
