According to new research, doctors in Switzerland prescribed antibiotics twice as often during the corona pandemic as before. (symbol image)

According to the study published in the journal ‘Clinical Microbiology and Infection’, antibiotic use has doubled from approximately eight to sixteen antibiotic prescriptions per 100 consultations. The dramatic increase in antibiotic prescribing was evident for all classes of antibiotics, including those not primarily intended for the treatment of respiratory infections.

This is despite the fact that antibiotics do not work against viruses such as the coronavirus, as the University of Basel emphasized.

The research team now wants to investigate whether prescribing practices have changed again in the years since the pandemic. In addition, she wants to investigate, in collaboration with the Swiss Center for Antibiotic Resistance, how resistance develops as a result of increased antibiotic use. (SDA)
