At the beginning of the meeting, the resignation of six city council members was announced. They are Erich Hess (SVP), Kurt Rüegsegger (SVP), Vivianne Esseiva (FDP), Dolores Dana (FDP), Therese Streit-Ramseier (EVP) and Diego Bigger (SP).
It was also announced on Thursday that Claude Grosjean (GLP) can move on to the Grand Council from the spring. Grosjean said he would resign from the city council in the first half of 2024 when asked by the Keystone-SDA news agency. His successor has not yet been decided.
Erich Hess wants to concentrate on his work as a national councilor, as evidenced by his resignation letter read out on Thursday. He served on the city council from 2005 to 2010 and since 2013.
Kurt Rüegsegger was once a member of the city parliament in the 1990s. From 1994 to 2000 he was politically active for the Freedom Party. He made his comeback for the SVP in 2011. In the pandemic year of 2021, he held the office of “highest Berner” as municipal council president.
Liberal Dolores Dana served in parliament for a total of sixteen years, as did her party colleague Vivianne Esseiva for seven years. The EPP’s Therese Streit-Ramseier and Social Democrat Diego Bigger are stepping down after about four years.
The Bern municipal council has 80 members. The next general election will take place in just under a year. (SDA)
