Newly elected Geneva MCG state councilor Mauro Poggia finds refuge in the SVP faction. He can therefore sit on committees.

The new Geneva Council of States Mauro Poggia (65) will now politicize in the SVP parliamentary group. After rapprochement in recent days, the SVP announced on Tuesday evening that it had accepted Poggia, who is a politician for the Mouvement Citoyens Genevois (MCG), as a group member.

Thanks to an agreement with the SVP, Poggia can hold positions on a committee basis. Committee seats are distributed during the winter session.

He wants to maintain independence

Poggia said last week that he also wanted to maintain his independence as a member of the SVP faction. The SVP group allows him to work with them without being integrated.

It is about the balance between efficient council work and attention to the electorate. Because his voters did not share all the SVP’s ideas. Poggia said that it was an important condition for him to be able to represent his own ideas, especially in the field of health. And unlike the National Council, the members of the small chamber first represent their canton and only then their party.

He did not want and was not allowed to go to the middle

For a long time it was considered likely that Poggia would have to politicize without a parliamentary group and would therefore not be able to claim committee seats. His two party colleagues in the National Council quickly joined the SVP after the elections. Poggia himself initially preferred the center, but that is not possible according to parliamentary law. The center faction was also not interested.

The former state councilor Poggia, very popular in Geneva, was elected to the Council of States on November 12, together with the previous Carlo Sommaruga (SP). Lisa Mazzone of the Greens lost her mandate. The protest movement MCG from Geneva is represented for the first time in the small room by Mauro Poggia. (SDA)
