German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser informed the European Commission of this on Tuesday.
According to her ministry, the federal police have arrested approximately 90 smugglers at these borders since October 16.
“Our package of stationary and mobile border police measures is important to combat irregular migration to Germany,” said Faeser. We remain in close contact with neighboring countries and the affected states so that all measures on both sides of the border work together as best as possible. Faeser emphasized: “At the same time, we continue to attach particular importance to ensuring that the controls have as little impact as possible on the daily lives of commuters, on trade and on travel.”
On October 16, the minister announced permanent border controls on these routes, initially for ten days and then extended once by twenty days. She justified this step with the fight against illegal immigration and smuggling crime.
According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, since the start of controls, the German Federal Police has detected approximately 6,900 unauthorized entries at these three land borders alone and “approximately 2,800 measures have been taken to prevent unauthorized entry and put an end to unauthorized stay ”.
Faeser said she wanted to return to internal borders as quickly as possible, where controls were not necessary. The reform of the Common European Asylum System with comprehensive protection of the EU’s external borders is “the central step”. The German government is working intensively on finalizing EU legislation in this area.
Since autumn 2015, there have been temporary stationary checks at the land border between Germany and Austria, which have been repeatedly expanded since then.
