Expansion of the district heating network: Basel-Stadt plans steps to phase out gas by 2037

With the expansion of district heating (as is currently the case in Freien Strasse), a large part of the homes in the canton of Basel-Stadt should be able to be disconnected from the gas network.

The switchover will be tailored to the current expansion of the district heating network. Connection to district heating is already possible for 5,800 homes today or after expansion, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Social Affairs and the Environment (WSU) announced together with the IWB.

However, there are another 3,200 homes outside the district heating area. Other CO2-neutral solutions are needed there, such as heat pumps or pellet heating. In addition, the majority of the 2,000 homes now use gas for cooking. According to WSU, this means that approximately 14,000 cooking gas stoves will have to be replaced with electric appliances.

The Grand Council decided in January 2023 that the gas network must be closed in 2037 to achieve the climate goals. (SDA)
