Bettina Surber had the upper hand at the extraordinary party conference in St. Gallen against Dario Sulzer from Wil and Guido Etterlin from Rorschach. Surber managed to obtain 53 votes from the 89 voters present in the first voting round, immediately gaining an absolute majority.

Bettina Surber was therefore nominated as the second SP candidate for the general elections on March 3, 2024, next to the previous Laura Bucher. Surber is a lawyer and chairman of the SP faction in the canton council of St. Gallen.

The SP is currently represented by two people in the seven-member government council in the canton of St. Gallen. The SVP with the highest number of voters has only one representation in the cantonal government. An attack on the second SP seat has already been announced.
