On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the travel brand ‘Lonely Planet’, the ‘Best in Travel’ series returns as a printed book – unlike last year, not a single German destination is selected.

However, the list of 50 popular travel destinations for 2024 worldwide (ten each in five categories) includes destinations close to Germany, such as the French capital Paris, the Austrian region of Saalfelden Leogang in the Salzburger Land and the acclaimed German neighbor Poland. for dynamic cities with nice restaurant addresses and national parks and appears in the “Top 10 Worth Money”.

When it comes to travel destinations worth their money, means of transport are also appearing, namely the new night train connections in Europe, for example from the Nightjet brand of the ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways): “After decades of silence, night trains in Europe are experiencing a renaissance – thanks to travelers who want to reduce CO2 emissions and watch the world fly by.”

“Best in Travel 2024” presents a number of well-known destinations that are not surprising, including Spain (in the “Top 10 Sustainability”), Prague (8th place in the top 10 cities) but also Tuscany and Southern Thailand (both in the “ Top 10 regions”).

Mongolia ranks first among the countries because it has a lot to offer for everyone “who is looking for space, adventure and culture”. The top ten countries also include Morocco, Croatia and Uzbekistan.

Nairobi takes first place among cities: the Kenyan capital “finally claims its status as a global cultural center”. The gastronomic scene is growing and flourishing.

In second place among cities is Paris, which is easily accessible from Germany, a ‘city that is constantly reinventing itself’ and will be ‘a spectacular world stage for the Summer Olympics and Paralympics’ in 2024.

The trend travel guide “Best in Travel 2024” is published by MairDumont, the largest German travel publishing group based in Ostfildern near Stuttgart. In previous editions of the series, Germany was not ignored. For example, the Saxon capital Dresden was on the list for 2023 last year. In 2022, Freiburg im Breisgau came third among the cities, behind Auckland (New Zealand) and Taipei (Taiwan).

In 2020, Bonn ranked fifth among cities for Beethoven’s 250th birthday. In 2019, Germany ranked second among states, mainly due to the Bauhaus anniversary. In 2018, Hamburg ranked fourth among cities. In 2016, Bavaria ranked eighth among regions, and in 2010, Germany ranked second among states.

Launched in 1973, the ‘Lonely Planet’ brand says it has printed more than 150 million travel guides over the past fifty years. The ‘Best in Travel’ series is one of a large number of editorial lists that supposedly select popular travel destinations for a year.
