The former Juso president

Cédric Wermuth, Fabian Molina, Tamara Funiciello – and now David Roth (38): With the election of the trade unionist from Lucerne, four former Juso presidents will sit simultaneously on the National Council from December. Roth was elected Wermuth’s successor to the leadership of the Young Socialists in 2011 and held this position until 2014. Since 2015, he has been chairman of the SP canton of Lucerne and long-time vice-chairman of the national party. He already ran for the National Council in 2011, 2015 and 2019 – he has now passed on his fourth attempt.

The inclusion politician

The Zurich inclusion politician Islam Alijaj made it to the National Council for the SP in Zurich. He fights for full equality for people with disabilities in Switzerland. He suffers from cerebral palsy due to lack of oxygen at birth. His muscle control and speech are impaired, but his intellect is not. In the Zurich city parliament he needs the help of an assistant to read the votes for him.

The sports lawyer

Jessica Jaccoud (40) has an interesting career, especially for an SP politician. The newly elected national councilor of Vaud, who was previously a member of the canton council, is a lawyer specialized in sports law and once worked at the European football association UEFA. At the age of 18, Jaccoud, who was still in high school at the time, became a mother. Your daughter is now an adult.

The medical entrepreneur

Simon Michel (FDP) is an entrepreneur and now also a national councilor.

Simon Michel (46), entrepreneur and candidate for the National Council for the FDP of Solothurn, enters the parliament in Bern for the canton of Solothurn. Michel heads the second generation of the medical technology company Ypsomed, headquartered in Burgdorf BE, a family business with approximately 2,000 employees worldwide. Michel succeeds the retiring National Councilor Kurt Fluri in the Liberal Party.

The cellist

Estelle Revaz (34) regularly performs for large audiences all over the world. But not as a politician, but as a cellist. Revaz, originally from Valais, is an internationally known musician. Now she has to adapt her game plan to her new job: she was elected to the National Council for the SP Geneva.

The economist

Isabelle Chappuis (52) did not complete the classic ox tour. For eight years she served in the municipal parliament of Tolochenaz, a village with fewer than 2,000 inhabitants. She is also president of the Centrist Women in the canton of Vaud – that is all her political experience. Now she will soon be politicking for the Center in the National Council. Chappuis is an economist and works at the University of Lausanne as director of the ‘Futures Lab’, which studies global trends.

The grill master

With Roman Bürgi (54), another entrepreneur is transferring to the National Council. He creates a seat for the SVP in the canton of Schwyz. Bürgi has a company that sells grills, deep fryers, slicers, bread slicers and other kitchen equipment.

The IV lawyer

Rémy Wyssmann (SVP) from Solothurn works as a lawyer.

A new face comes to Bern from the canton of Solothurn: Rémy Wyssmann (56). During the election campaign, the SVP member praised himself as a ‘politician with teeth’ and without lobby connections. He previously served on the cantonal council of Solothurn and is vice president of the cantonal party. He works professionally as a lawyer, specializing in liability and insurance law. One of his areas of expertise: disability insurance (IV). Wyssmann is fighting alongside people whose IV applications have been rejected.

The steamship expert

Nina Schläfli (33) joins the National Council in the canton of Thurgau for the SP. She is an independent historian and has chosen an unusual subject for her dissertation: she writes about the history of steamship building in Switzerland.

The biologist

What a surprise! In Lucerne it was not the SVP but the SP that won a seat at the expense of the Green Liberals. The winner is Hasan Candan (38) from the city of Lucerne. The qualified sports scientist, business scientist and biologist works at the environmental protection organization Pro Natura and is responsible for biodiversity policy there. The father of a son and amateur football player has been politicking in the Lucerne canton council since 2011.

The first Nidwalden woman in the National Council

Lucky winner: Regina Durrer-Knobel, the new Nidwaldner Mitte councilor.

It is a first for the canton of Nidwalden: for the first time a woman, Regina Durrer-Knobel (52), has reached the National Council. The cantonal parliamentarian takes away the only seat of the National Council of Nidwalden from the SVP. Their previous representative in Bern, Peter Keller (52), no longer participated. Durrer is vice-rector of a vocational school and also teaches there. She lives with her husband and three teenagers in Ennetmoos.

The LGBTQ activist

Anna Rosenwasser makes the jump to the National Council in Zurich. She has made a big jump on the SP list: from place 20 to place 8. She is one of the most successful LGBTQ activists in the country and has more than 30,000 Instagram followers on her account for queer and feminist activism in Switzerland. Rosenwasser was also co-head of the Lesbian Organization Switzerland (LOS) and recently published her first book, “Rosa Buch”.
