Blick: Mr. Aeschi, the SVP is the big election winner. How do you explain why your party is making such gains?
Thomas Aeschi: This is the reward for continually putting your finger on the most pressing problems. The good performance is therefore a confirmation of this course. The population is no longer prepared to accept the asylum chaos in Switzerland. And we are the only ones standing up against excessive immigration. Thirdly, it is only we who are doing something about the declining security in the country.
Reduce safety, what do you mean by that?
We are the only ones who consistently want to deport criminal foreigners and are firmly committed to armed neutrality. This is also why the population has placed its trust in us. The other two problems, the asylum chaos and the high level of immigration, were already burning under the fingernails of the Swiss people four years ago. However, these were covered up at the time by the climate hype surrounding Greta Thunberg and the women’s strike. That was no longer the case.
How do you want to ensure that your concerns lead to breakthroughs?
As we know, we will continue to need other parties to have a majority. We approach the FDP and the center, who have so far been unwilling to actually do anything about the asylum chaos and excessive immigration.
What exactly do you want to do?
Systematic border controls are again necessary. It is insane that the German government under the leadership of SPD Chancellor Olaf Scholz is introducing border controls, but we are doing nothing. We must finally impose immigration restrictions too! I expect that the other bourgeois parties will reach out in view of these election results.
You are actually criticizing Elisabeth Baume-Schneider. Is she the right person to lead the Justice Department?
We adhere to the principle: as the second strongest party, the SP is entitled to two seats in the Federal Council. And we will choose the officially nominated candidates that the SP presents to us. Conversely, we expect that the SP will also re-elect Albert Rösti and Guy Parmelin.
