She is excited to take on the responsibility as a federal councilor. Bernese government councilor Evi Allemann (45) has answered questions about a possible candidacy in recent weeks. Now, after the autumn holidays, the SP woman is coming out of hiding.
Tomorrow, Monday, Allemann invites the media to a “Point de Presse” at the roof bar of the Volkshaus in Bern’s old town. In all likelihood, she will repeat the words she said more than a year ago when she put herself forward as a candidate to succeed the resigned Simonetta Sommaruga (63): “I am ready.”
Evi Allemann would be the first woman to follow in the footsteps of SP federal councilor Alain Berset. Otherwise, only men have applied for the vacant government position so far: Daniel Jositsch (58), Beat Jans (59), Matthias Aebischer (55), Jon Pult (39) and Roger Nordmann (50). It is quite possible that more candidates will throw their hat into the ring in the coming weeks. For example, SP co-chairman Cédric Wermuth (37) or Bern councilor Tamara Funiciello (33).
Open race
It is currently completely unclear who will win the race in December. For Basel government chairman Beat Jans, who was often mentioned as a top favorite in the past, the air has become thinner since he announced his candidacy. The farmers don’t want him. And support in the Federal Palace is reportedly also crumbling.
The influential Juso wing in parliament does not want a Federal Council “made up of early retirees”. It is therefore not inconceivable that the SP faction will put Evi Allemann and Jon Pult on the map at the end of November, both with a Juso past. A scenario that could cause a surprise in the elections for the Federal Council: that a majority from the middle class would suddenly give its vote to a candidate that the SP had not even nominated. Zurich State Councilor Daniel Jositsch emphasizes that he will only stand as an official candidate, but that a lot of water will still flow along the Aare before the deadline.
Meanwhile, the Bernese Social Democrats are threatened with a test in the coming weeks: who can they trust? Evi Allemann from Bern – or rather Matthias Aebischer from Bern? This Sunday’s elections could provide some clarity on this. If, as predicted, the SP men win back a seat in the National Council, the nomination for Evi Allemann would be anything but an absolute success.
