About what: about Israel, always about Israel. Since its founding in 1948. For 75 years, not a single year passed without this only home of the Jews being threatened by neighboring countries and the Islamic world, which is imbued with hatred of Israel.

This is how you have to imagine it – like the Swiss: a small and efficient nation surrounded by haters who definitely don’t want to accept its existence. Who also talk about peace, but are constantly preparing for the destruction of this state, which is half the size of Switzerland and has almost the same number of inhabitants.

Under constant existential threat, constantly exposed to Arab wars of aggression and Palestinian terrorist attacks, Israel has emerged as the technologically and economically leading democracy in the world.

The only democracy and the only constitutional state in the center of the Islamic world, which can hardly offer its citizens any development – except for an authoritarian, perverted luxury based on raw materials, especially oil. Archaic religion stands in the way of any further development towards modernity and civilization – along with the dictatorships that have developed from it.

You can also imagine the Israeli reality – as a Swiss – like this: Rockets hit Sprüngli on Paradeplatz, where Zurich residents and tourists spend their lunch break with cappuccino or hot chocolate – this is the reality in Tel Aviv. A week ago, thousands of Hamas bullets targeted civilians.

Now we would have to list all the horrors of Saturday’s attack a week ago: every beheaded child, every woman raped, every teenager killed at a pop concert, every kidnapped hostage. But the photos are too cruel. Piety allows only to describe in words what happened.

Behind the attack by the Hamas terrorist movement, which controls the Palestinian Gaza Strip, there is a geopolitical calculation inspired and directed by the Islamic Republic of Iran. The mullahs in Tehran consistently pursue one goal:

Israel should not exist.

Israel should not always exist and should not exist again: from the Six Day War in 1967 to the Yom Kippur War in 1973 and the Gaza War in 2008/2009. War, war, war is the unbearable history of a democratic country. There is no similar example to this.

Of course, Israel has made mistakes in its existence, which is threatened daily and hourly: through settlements and occupations that can be criticized with a raised finger when viewed from the safety of the northern shore of the Mediterranean or from the safety of the Alps.

Israel constantly sought peace. But he was repeatedly rejected by his enemies. They relied on war and terror, which regularly resulted in defeats for the Palestinian side and the Palestinian cause.

In 2000/2001, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak even proposed East Jerusalem to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat as the capital of a state that would include 97 percent of the West Bank. In vain.

Israel’s withdrawal from the Gaza Strip ten years ago was followed by terror that is now reaching its climax and spelling the predictable defeat of the terrorist party Hamas.

In the Arab world, it is now dawning on some rulers and rulers that a peace deal with leading technology nation Israel could pay off. The message was received by the Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan. Even Saudi Arabia began to understand this until the Hamas attack prevented its rapprochement with Israel.

Israel is a showcase of the best that the Western world has to offer the Middle East: science and business, democracy and the rule of law. However, the quality of a democratic constitutional state is explosive for an authoritarian and politically arrogant Islam. Secularization as a necessary condition for the functioning of modern society is still a long way from a Muslim-dominated region.

Thus, hatred of Israel is always simultaneously hatred of the West – against the most successful world of values. Switzerland knows this too. What has so far failed to classify Hamas as a terrorist organization is Switzerland’s hostility towards Israel?

Oh no, we just have nothing to do with it – we are in the heart of Europe, we are in the Alps.

We are innocent angels.
