The Greens are threatened with a bitter election defeat. The latest SRG election barometer predicts minus 3.5 percentage points. With the loss, the party would have a national voter share of 9.7 percent. The survey’s margin of error is plus/minus 1.2 percentage points. But it is becoming clear that the green wave of 2019 is breaking. Does Green Party campaign leader Lisa Mazzone (35) admit defeat?

Mrs Mazzone, what is wrong with the Greens? With every survey, the share of voters decreases.
Lisa Mazzone:
We improved in the previous election barometer, but now the figures have fallen slightly. This indicates that the starting position is open.

Since March, the share of voters has fallen from 11.7 to 9.7 percent.
Let me give you a counterexample: Four years ago, the polls predicted 10 percent. We earned over 13 percent. The surveys have underestimated us enormously. So everything is still possible! We were recently able to mobilize 60,000 people for the climate demonstration in Bern.

Despite this demonstration, there is now a risk of a loss of 3.5 percentage points.
That is why we must mobilize strongly now. I am concerned about the impending setback in the field of climate protection. All young people who want a future worth living and all women who fight for greater equality must go to the polls – before it is too late and a climate response takes hold.

They fear a climate backlash. The climate issue is of great importance from the perspective of voters. The only thing people are more concerned about is rising health insurance premiums.
We are the only ones who have been consistently committed to the climate for forty years. Have you heard anyone else talk about this in Parliament?

Yes, for example the SP.
We work together with the SP. But it is clear that the climate is our first priority. This is different with the SP.

And yet you fail to mobilize people. Your election app also seems to be a flop.
No not at all. Since 2019, we have a third more members and we run 600 candidates, a new record. More than 2,600 people are also involved in the app.

Shouldn’t you ask yourself whether you are politicizing beyond the people?
The common people downplay climate change. And with an aggressiveness and hardness that I have never experienced before. The SVP in particular is shooting sharply at us.

How Much To Blame Are Climate Glues For The Impending Crash? The activists are considered the third biggest nuisance to the Swiss.
This is a diversionary tactic to avoid talking about the lack of climate action. What’s really a problem: There is no plan to phase out fossil fuels. The bourgeois majority in parliament is against it.

They place the responsibility for the impending collapse of the elections on the citizens. Only 40 percent of Green voters support Balthasar Glättli. This places him at the bottom of all party leaders. Is he the right man at the top?
We bear our responsibility as a collective. In our party there is not just one leader, but many heads leading.

But if the polls are correct, someone has to take responsibility. Will Glättli resign then?
It is normal to ask yourself this question after legislation. But we are not a football team that just changes coaches and hopes everything gets better.

What are the ambitions of the Federal Council? Party leader Aline Trede has said that the Greens will not make a claim if they fall below 10 percent.
The newly elected faction will make this decision after the elections.

Does this mean that you cannot rule out running for office after all?
We are not intimidated by a survey; what counts is the result at the ballot box. Our seat is much more legitimate than the FDP’s second seat. The climate needs a voice in the Federal Council.

Do you have a contingency plan to turn things around before day X?
Together with economists, wine growers and artists, we are launching the ‘1000 Women for the Climate’ campaign. And the most important thing is: on the street, on the street, on the street. For climate protection instead of a slide to the right!
