The SP is considered the party for equality, but now only men come forward when it comes to awarding one of the most prestigious Swiss jobs, that of federal councilor. Roger Nordmann (50) is the fifth comrade to nominate to succeed Alain Berset (51).
Only rejections
The party announced that it wanted to admit all genders in the application procedure. The SP women announced in mid-September that they had enough possible candidates. You are spoiled for choice. Since then, however, it has become quiet around the women’s elections. The only rejections were heard: State Councilor Eva Herzog (61), National Councilors Priska Seiler Graf (55), Nadine Masshardt (39) and Min Li Marti (49) and State Councilor candidate Flavia Wasserfallen (44) are not. interested in joining the state government.
“No, the women are not shy, they just take more time for the decision,” says co-chair of the SP women, Tamara Funiciello (33), who explains the lack of a women’s candidacy so far.
She is still thinking about whether or not she wants to get into the candidate carousel. The possible SP candidates usually weigh their chances better than their male colleagues, she explains. “The price is still high for women if you don’t succeed,” says Funiciello.
You already have Baume-Schneider
The SP certainly has no problem with women, says Min Li Marti, state councilor of Zurich. But now that the seat has become available, the pressure on the SP to necessarily fill it with a woman is not that great, says the Zurich resident. After all, the Social Democrats already have a federal councilor, Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (59). On the other hand, being the only party represented by two women in state government wasn’t a bad thing.
However, the complete absence of a female candidacy is not particularly good for the self-proclaimed equality party. It certainly helps that there are still at least one or two SP women in the race: co-chair Mattea Meyer (35) is still considering running for office – as is SP government councilor Evi Allemann (45) from Bern.
Allemann had already signed up to succeed Simonetta Sommaruga (63). But she didn’t get her company’s two-party ticket. However, there are now increasing signs that Allemann must save the Equality Party’s reputation. This time she will probably only be allowed to participate if there is a certain chance that she will no longer end up missing the ticket. And it is said that she has a good chance of being nominated this time. She has the support of women in her own party.

But does the SP actually want the Bernese woman as a federal councilor? Especially since the election of Baume-Schneider, the party must be aware that the person considered the party’s favorite does not always get elected.
The registration deadline for those interested in Berset’s successor is October 29. Parliament is re-elected a week earlier. A lot can still happen before the deadline ends. Maybe SP women will suddenly pull another candidate from the hat. The Equality Party would still have a chance to get two women in the Federal Council picture.
