It is a new dimension in the threat of violence against politicians. Because of the German AfD politician Alice Weidel (44), the Kapo Schwyz had to move on September 23 – and take the family to safety. A spokesperson told SonntagsBlicks that mounting evidence pointed to an attack on her family.
Weidel is not alone. The number of threats against Swiss politicians has also increased in recent years, according to figures from the Federal Police Office (Fedpol). This secures, among other things, the Swiss parliamentarians.
While Fedpol received 246 threat reports in 2019, in 2021 – at the height of the corona pandemic – there were 1,215. However, last year the numbers dropped again to 528 reports.
Of the reported threats in 2019, 18 were criminally relevant. In 2021 there were 120 cases. Fedpol suspects that the reported cases are only the “tip of the iceberg” because not all those affected report the threats.
“This is not expected to change in the near future.”
“Despite the decrease in the number of threat reports in 2022, the content and tone of the threats remain worrying,” Fedpol wrote to Blick. “It cannot be assumed that this will change in the near future.”
A major study by the “Tages-Anzeiger” shows how serious the threats are. Hundreds of parliamentarians at all levels are being insulted and even threatened with death. (brother)
