Premium debts are constantly increasing: debt trap for health insurance premiums

Health insurance premiums are increasingly becoming a debt trap. A revision of the law is now aimed at easing the burden on low-earning young people.

The strong premium increase is mainly felt by people with a low income. This also includes young people who have to take over their parents’ debts if they have not paid the premiums. These legacy issues should now disappear in the future.

As the “SonntagsZeitung” has learned, the Federal Council should implement the corresponding provision from January 1, 2024. The corresponding article in the Health Insurance Act is amended. Young adults should no longer be prosecuted for outstanding premiums that arose while they were minors.

“Important and correct”

This change is also welcomed by health insurers, the newspaper writes. “It is important and right that young adults do not have to start their adult lives with an inheritance that they cannot handle,” says Santésuisse.

Curafutura also describes the new arrangement as ‘sensible’. You will receive the premium increase on time in 2024.

Increasing premium debt

Premium debt has been one of the biggest debt traps in Switzerland for all age groups for years.

According to Debt Advice Switzerland, three in five people who come to them for advice have debts with their health insurer. This share has steadily increased in recent years. (kes)
