Prevention instead of expensive treatment: Prevention law aims to save huge sums of money

Healthcare is less costly for healthy people. Politicians are now demanding a preemptive law that would put an end to premium increases.

This week, Bundestag Member Alain Berset (51) announced a major increase in health insurance premiums for 2024. As the “NZZ am Sonntag” survey shows, politicians from left to centre, doctors and professional organizations now want to initiate a new health law to slow down the increase in costs in the healthcare system.

SP National Assembly Member Flavia Wasserfallen (44), appointed as head of the “Healthy Switzerland Alliance” “NZZ am Sonntag”.

Greens National Assembly Member Manuela Weichelt (56) plans to put forward a corresponding proposal: “There are laws for illness, accident and disability, why not for health?” she asks.

Prevention is not the only solution

Better prevention efforts could save huge amounts of healthcare costs, experts say: This includes information campaigns, better advice from doctors and hospitals, and legal interventions. “The most effective measures are those that directly affect behavior, such as banning smoking in indoor public spaces,” says Thomas Mattig (52), director of the Swiss Foundation for Health Promotion.

Bundestag Member Alain Berset says something similar in an interview. More definitely needs to be done to keep people healthy: “Of course, we should also focus on disease prevention.” On the other hand, he rejects the idea of a single fund, as his party wants: “A single fund will probably not solve the cost problem.”

Berset predicts a complicated situation for his successor

The outgoing Health Minister envisaged a complex task for his successor. He recommended solving the problems directly. Even if it means messing with everyone.

Berset believed that no other party member could have run the Ministry of Internal Affairs better. “You can seat everyone, it will remain very complicated,” the head of the Federal Ministry of Internal Affairs said in an interview with the French-speaking Swiss newspaper “Le Matin Dimanche” published on Sunday. Problems in the health system arise from the large number of actors. Berset told “NZZ am Sonntag” that if it were completely free, it would require all healthcare professionals to meet annually.

Berset emphasized transparency in both meetings. “I would set up a system where you can see exactly who is doing what and at what price,” Berset said on “NZZ am Sonntag”. (cut/SDA)
