The vicar general of the diocese of Lausanne, Geneva and Fribourg, Bernard Sonney, has resigned following allegations of abuse. As “Kath.ch” reports, Sonney informed the committees of the Swiss diocese on Tuesday. He decided to take this step ‘after a report’, it says in the communiqué, which was about combating abuses in the diocese.
“To my great surprise, accusations were made against me. I therefore resign from my position.” The Interim Council of the Diocese of Lausanne, Geneva and Fribourg quotes Bernard Sonney. It was also announced that a priest from the diocese who was accused abroad had been suspended.
“A necessary, painful process”
The fight against abuse continues, it was said. It is “a necessary, painful process.” It is necessary for the entire Church and especially for those affected, whose years of suffering and trauma the diocese recognizes.
Bishop Charles Morerod is currently recovering from emergency surgery required in mid-September. According to the communiqué, his health is developing positively. (SDA/a)
