The National Council has decided not to help Ukraine for the time being. With 96 votes to 85, he voted in favor of a motion by center faction leader Philipp Matthias Bregy (45) to put additional humanitarian aid on the back burner.
The Center Party represented a very different position in a consultation response on September 18, 2023. It argued in favor of reporting and requesting additional expenditure for Ukraine separately, with or without an additional legal basis – signed by party chairman Gerhard Pfister (60).

Is the foundation missing?
The parliamentary group leader had previously stated that the Federal Office of Justice (BJ) had made it clear that there was no legal basis for this. This must be created first.
SP Council Member Fabian Molina (33) contradicts this. “According to the BJ, a legal basis is only necessary for reconstruction. But this is about humanitarian aid. It is surprising that Bregy is taking action here, even though he clearly does not know much about the subject,” the comrade said.
“It’s not about 5 billion”
The fact that the impetus to banish the three motions to the committee came from the leadership of the center faction led in advance to some criticism within their own party. When Bregy talks about the fact that he wants to invest 5 billion francs in the rehabilitation of Ukrainian cities, it only shows that he does not talk about it, according to party representatives in the political center. It’s just a matter of repairing water pipes and providing electricity. “For the basic necessities.”
“The big losers are the people in Ukraine,” Molina emphasizes. But it is also clear that no one abroad understands that Switzerland considers itself too poor to help here. “At least the center party has now exposed itself shortly before the elections,” was Molina’s harsh assessment.
Awkward?
The middle completely disagrees with this. But some see the fact that the centrist leadership has now helped leave Ukraine out in the cold as more than just inconvenient in view of the approaching elections.
