Finding accommodation in Zurich is generally difficult. The SVP now wants to make it easier for seniors through an initiative. (symbol image)

Thousands of elderly people are desperately looking for an apartment in Zurich, the SVP wrote in a statement on Wednesday. There is a long waiting list for senior apartments. It was said that there are currently about 4,000 people standing there. The SVP now has six months to submit 3,000 valid signatures.

The city council rejected a similar motion by the SVP and EVP in 2021, which called for 20 percent of apartments for people over 60 in city-owned apartments.

Just last week, the city council approved a popular initiative on this subject. The initiative launched by left-wing circles calls for the creation of 2,000 additional apartments for the elderly by non-profit housing developers.
