In Switzerland it will be forbidden to cover your face in public in the future.

It is a kind of farewell gift for SVP Councilor Walter Wobmann (65), who is stepping down from the council. Parliament supports fines of up to 1,000 francs for violations of the national ban on face coverings.

On Wednesday, the National Council approved the federal law to implement the so-called burqa initiative.

Wearing a face mask during Carnival is no problem

But Parliament also spoke out in favor of exceptions. Coverings should therefore continue to be permitted in places of worship, at carnivals or to protect health. Authorities may also allow cover at demonstrations if this is necessary to exercise the fundamental rights of freedom of expression and freedom of assembly.

In the general vote, the Grand Chamber accepted the proposal by 151 votes to 29 with six abstentions. The company is ready for the final vote.

A minority of the National Political Committee of the National Council (SPK-N) unsuccessfully requested not to intervene in the deal. She argued that the ban on wearing a headscarf is a matter of order in public spaces. The cantons are responsible for this.

According to the federal government, 15 cantons already have a mask ban. These cantonal laws will be overridden when the federal law comes into force.

The people and the cantons narrowly approved the popular initiative “Yes to the ban on facial coverings” in March 2021, with 51.2 percent of the yes votes. According to the Federal Council’s draft, the ban on covering the face should apply in publicly accessible places. (SDA)
