The Wankel engine is back at Mazda at an affordable price

Although Mazda is known to many as a brand of solid and civilian cars, enthusiasts know better. Take the MX-5 for example. Models like a Mazda 2 don’t really make your car heart beat faster unless there’s an exciting powertrain under the hood. For example: a Wankel engine!

The Japanese brand is currently already delivering a model with a Wankel engine. The MX-30 features the type of engine block as a range extender. What about the Mazda 2?

Wankel engine back at Mazda

When we think of a Wankel engine, we immediately think of sports cars like the Mazda RX-7, but we also immediately know that a powertrain in this form will be too good to be true in 2023. In the Mazda 2 the 830 cc A Wankel engine is used to supply power to a 17.8 kWh battery pack. That’s what the otherwise well-informed Japanese Best Car Web says. The battery pack is connected to a 170 horsepower electric motor that drives the Mazda’s wheels.

In addition to the Mazda 2 EV with range extender, there is also said to be a 1.5-liter three-cylinder with support from an electric motor. The system output would be 116 hp.

I’m still waiting for the final numbers and prices

What the prices and exact specifications are is still unclear.
