National parental leave with a flexible distribution and flexible benefits is “elementary for equality between men and women”, according to the proposal. This could improve family and work compatibility.

The government rejected the request for status. She referred to efforts in the federal government and in several other cantons. The issue is already on the political agenda throughout Switzerland.

In the council, Franziska Steiner-Kaufmann (center) explained that the issue of parental leave had been blocked for some time. The initiative represents an opportunity for the Canton of St. Gallen to set an example. There was support from the GLP, the Greens and the SP, although the demand did not go far enough.

The SVP spoke out against this. The FDP spokeswoman explained that she was against a state solution. Ultimately, the request for status was rejected by 62 votes in favor, 49 votes in favor and one abstention. (SDA)
