The owner of the painting has contacted the authorities, the municipality of Sitten announced on Thursday. “I had seen the call, but thought it was a much larger painting,” says owner Emanuelle de Kalbermatten in the communiqué. “I didn’t connect it to the painting in my hallway.”

Her son pointed out that the city was looking for the photo. She couldn’t exactly reconstruct the path of the painting, which belonged to an extinct branch of the family.

The city of Zion was looking for the photo in view of the celebration of the 175th anniversary of the federal constitution on August 26. The city archives found a photographic reproduction of the portrait for an exhibition. The original image, on the other hand, seemed to have disappeared.

The painting was painted in 1835 by Laurent Ritz, a portrait painter of the time and father of the famous painter Raphaël Ritz. City archivist Coline Remy explained this to the Keystone-SDA news agency.

François de Kalbermatten held various political positions in the course of his life. He was, among other things, a municipal councilor, deputy mayor before the establishment of the municipality in 1848 and a state councilor. When the city government was formed, he took over the leadership of the new institution that was being formed. (SDA)
