The adopted resolution states for the first time that forced marriages are a form of gender-specific violence, the Federal Office for Foreign Affairs (FDFA) announced on Friday. In this context, Switzerland has stressed the need to combat structural discrimination and gender stereotypes, which are among the main causes of forced marriage.
The 53rd session of the UN Human Rights Council began on June 19. The focus was on protecting the rights of women and girls. The FDFA wrote that Switzerland has strongly advocated compliance with international standards on women’s rights and gender equality.
Concrete preventive measures
Switzerland in particular took an active part in the negotiations on the resolution to eliminate violence against women and girls. In doing so, she pleaded for concrete preventive measures and guaranteed access to justice for the victims.
The human rights situation in many countries, public expressions of religious hatred, climate change and the transfer of arms were also discussed at the conference. (SDA)
