In some Rioja vintages, the cork should have been picked a long time ago.

2002

Like many wine regions in Europe, 2002 was a rainy and relatively cool year in Rioja, with only a few good wines produced. These harsh weather conditions have resulted in relatively low production volumes and often sobering quality. Most of the wines have probably passed their peak by now.

1996

Bad weather hindered the harvest of this initially promising crop. Heavy rains resulted in watering of structureless grapes and wines. The drinking window has long been closed for many wines.

1993

Similar to 1996, heavy rain and severe cold weather during harvest affected an initially promising crop. After 30 years, this year’s Rioja wines are almost nonexistent. And if you do: no, thanks.

1983

Most Rioja wines of this crop were relatively fine and drinkable early. Concentration and structure were so rare that almost all drops had already passed their peak. By the way, the older brother who was a year older in 1982 was great and produced many top notch wines and this is still excellent today.

1980

This year, the wine quality was average from the start and the wines were intended for early consumption. They’ve already left the top today and it’s not much fun to drink. Our tip: use it for cooking.
