Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis has to cut back on embassies due to austerity measures.

The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) wants to close the embassy in Bolivia in the summer of 2024. This is due to austerity measures.

With the closure of the embassy, the EDA wants to fulfill part of an austerity mandate, the department of Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis (62) announced on Monday at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency.

500 million for foreign representations

The FDFA thus confirms a media report from “NZZ am Sonntag”, which was the first to report on the closure of the embassy. In addition to the embassy in La Paz, Bolivia, the consulate general in Chengdu in China will also close at the end of 2023.

In total, the FDFA should save 63.4 million Swiss francs. The measures in Switzerland’s so-called external network bring in 10 million, according to the statements of the EDA. The costs for the 167 foreign representations amounted to some 500 million Swiss francs.

The austerity measures will be prioritized to match Switzerland’s foreign policy interests and available resources. The closure of the embassy in La Paz is therefore related to Switzerland’s withdrawal from bilateral development cooperation in Bolivia. The Federal Council takes a final decision on the closure of the embassy and consulate general. (SDA/sq)
