Livia Leu no longer wants to negotiate with the EU. Federal Councilor Ignazio Cassis has to fill the post for the third time.

At its last meeting, the Federal Council aims to fill the most important vacant post in the federal administration: that of Secretary of State in the Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA).

As the “Tages-Anzeiger” reports, Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis (62) proposes to his colleagues in the government Alexandre Fasel (61) as successor to Livia Leu (62). She resigned after two and a half years. She becomes ambassador in Berlin.

Fasel is an experienced ambassador

It is currently not clear whether Fasel – like Leu – will also become EU chief negotiator. The Freiburger Fasel has long been traded as a favorite for this post.

He experienced Brexit as ambassador in London. In 2020, he wanted to take over the leadership of the Swiss mission to the EU in Brussels. Fasel was considered set. But when the Bundesrat as a whole wanted to go ahead with the nomination, Foreign Minister Cassis stated that Fasel was not interested at all. He would rather be ambassador in Cairo. (she)
