It was a light-hearted remark on the most important day of her political career: when Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (59) appeared before the media, she immediately insulted the inhabitants of Appenzeller. When asked what she would say to an Appenzell resident who no longer feels represented on the Federal Council, the Jurassi resident replies: “I think it’s a political issue. The Appenzell residents may not even know that elections are being held. for the Bundesrat.” She was quick to add, “Well, all the people.”
But the damage was done. Many Appenzeller felt touched. “She describes us as a hillbilly,” SVP National Councilor David Zuberbühler, 44, said to “20 Minutes”. Together with FDP state councilor Andrea Caroni (43), he invited Baume-Schneider to Appenzellerland.
Pupils scour the Bundesrat with political questions
Baume-Schneider followed on Friday. Accompanied by Landamman Yves Nöel Balmer (44) and Councilor Alfred Stricker (62), the Federal Councilor visited Trogen AR, reports the “Appenzeller Zeitung”. First we went to the Pestalozzi children’s village in Trogen, then to a panel discussion in the local canton school, moderated by State Councilor Caroni. There, Baume-Schneider was laced with many political issues – including equality in politics, human rights and neutrality. It is unlikely that the canton students actually missed a Federal Council election.
Baume-Schneider himself seems happy with the visit. She writes on Twitter about meeting a family that fled Ukraine. “Thank you for the moving conversation. And thank you for the invitation to Ausserrhoden Andrea Caroni
and David Zuberbuehler. (brother)
