On Thursday, during an extraordinary session on migration, the small chamber accepted a corresponding motion by Hannes Germann (SVP/SH) by 26 to 18 votes. The initiative now goes to the National Council. An identical motion was rejected there on Wednesday.
According to Justice Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider, the Federal Council will soon decide on the next two-year program. However, the program should only run if sufficient capacity is available. Switzerland is currently not accepting resettled refugees.
The Council of States is also calling for a “return offensive”: the federal government must consistently return rejected asylum seekers. The National Council had rejected an identical proposal on Wednesday.
