Anyone wearing a headscarf in Switzerland should face a fine of 1,000 francs in the future. The Council of States approved the law on Monday that bans face coverings. The ban was decided by the people and the cantons in March 2021 in the form of a popular initiative. (archive image)

The Council of States approved the law without amendment with 36 votes in favor and 8 against. The National Council has yet to decide on the bill.

The covering ban, for example, applies to hooligans and normally prohibits face masks at demonstrations. It is also forbidden to wear full-body veils or burqas in public. Covering should remain allowed in places of worship or at carnivals. Authorities can also approve coverings at demonstrations if necessary to protect people.

The law implements the initiative for a ban on face coverings, which was accepted by 51.2 percent in March 2021. The preparatory advisory committee initially recommended that the Council of States regulate the provisions on a cantonal basis. The council rejected this at the request of Marco Chiesa (SVP/TI).
