Neutrality does not mean silence

Hamid Ghareh Hasanloo and Farzaneh Ghareh Hasanloo return home after protests marking the 40th anniversary of the death of 20-year-old human rights activist Hadith Najafi, who was gunned down in the street by Iranian regime security forces. The pair run into protesters who attack the Basij militias, who are later killed as a result. According to eyewitnesses, the men are trying to stop the doctor Hamid Gare Hasanlu.

The next day, in front of their 13-year-old daughter, the couple are brutally arrested and accused of involvement in the death of the Basij militias. Both are tortured in prison. Hamid Gare Hasanlu has multiple rib fractures and a ruptured lung. In a mock trial, he is sentenced to death. He learns about it after the operation that his injuries required. His wife should go to jail for 25 years. The couple is known for their humanitarian work and they have a son and a daughter.

As part of a campaign that is also taking place in other parliaments, I have taken on the political sponsorship of Hamid Gare Hasanlu, a radiologist. I want to draw attention to his fate and prevent his murder. The terrible executions of two young men a few days ago keep me awake. Slowly and painfully hanging on a construction crane for the war against God. Middle Ages in pure culture. Since the start of human rights protests in Iran, more than 30,000 people have been arrested and about 1,000 people have been killed. The regime is out of control.

change of scenery. Two years ago, a Swiss delegation went to Iran together with the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Reason: 100 years of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and Iran. At the same time, young sportsman Navid Afkari was sentenced to death for participating in the protests. He was also tortured. Audio documentary of a desperate 27-year-old jailbreak. I still hear his voice. The Swiss delegation was still on the plane when Navid Afkari was executed. A clear provocation against our government and the rule of law in Switzerland.

The mullahs showed what they think about our diplomacy. Official Switzerland should not put up with this and should do everything to stop these executions. Summoning the ambassador, publicly reminding him of human rights, and passing EU sanctions against Iranian regime officials are the bare minimum. This is what our special role in relations with Iran requires. Neutrality does not mean silence, but a clear definition of what is right and what is not, otherwise good offices will turn into a disservice. Our diplomacy does not serve the mullahs. It serves the people of Iran, who are fighting for the same rights that “the world’s oldest continuous democracy” takes for granted.
