Is this Odermatt really as talented as everyone says? I asked myself this question before I trained with him for the first time in 2016, shortly after Audie won his first gold medal at the Junior World Championships. It often happened that junior world champions praised too much in advance. I realized that Marco is in fact an outstanding skier no later than 2018 in Bormio.
The Stelvio was completely icy at the time. Many veterans were as pale as a sheet during the inspection. What did the then 21-year-old Audie do? He mastered the brutal Super-G selection without any problems and was able to celebrate his first top 10 finish in a World Cup speed race, finishing 8th that day.
Now Odermatt has reached another milestone, taking his first World Cup downhill victory on the Lauberhorn. In my opinion, the way he achieved this success cannot be surpassed. I haven’t seen anything wrong with Marco for a long time.
But I think that winning the short Lauberhorn descent in Odi does not evoke the greatest emotions. He is well aware that success in Saturday’s downhill means something more. And if he wins that too, he might still have to think about starting in the slalom. Otherwise, at 26 years old, Odi will run out of goals…
