On Monday, a single judge in the National League opened the case against Christian Wohlwend. Coach Ajoie, 46, was caught on Friday during his sixth consecutive defeat for making disrespectful gestures towards Christian Dubé, coach and sporting director of Leader Fribourg.
Wohlwend was undeniably out of control and showed little style in his minute and a half performance. Even though the impulsive Engadine then claimed in break room style that Dube was “roaring just the same” before he managed to apologize in a statement from HC Ajoye on Monday night.
But is this reason enough to bring a case against the former coach of the U20 national team? No. Wohlwend has already been punished enough. Videos of his antics will circulate on the Internet for years to come. And let’s be honest: the coach doesn’t look very good in it. He makes a fool of himself. At the latest, when he makes fun of Dube’s clothes and hairstyle, it’s just awkward.
Wohlwend was disrespectful, not discriminatory
But no one was hurt except Wohlwend. This is in contrast to the incident a year and a half ago when the then HCD coach threw three water bottles at the referees during a playoff against Zug and was forced to pay a fine of 4,400 francs.
Dube won’t have sleepless nights, and neither will those who wear buns or suits. This outburst was not racist, homophobic or otherwise discriminatory. The league’s suspension last February of ZSC coach Marc Crawford for a game when he called Finnish referee Mikko Kaukokari the anti-gay slur “cocksucker” was not exceeded here.
Wohlwend’s downfall was no less terrible than, for example, when the then ZSC coach Rickard Grönborg two years ago shouted at his Lausanne colleague John Foust and even invited him to fight. At that time, the league left the matter alone, sending an email to the Swede’s address.
The generous line was correct. You want emotions to be involved as long as no one is discriminated against. Relationships need to be maintained.
