The leadership crisis at Swiss Animal Welfare (STS) continues. SP national board member Martina Muntz and ETH agricultural engineer Michel Roux were removed from their positions as members of the central board. In June, Muntz and Roux publicly lambasted STS President Nicole Ruh, accusing her and her followers of authoritarian leadership and a culture of non-transparency. Now they are relegated to the background within the association.

The struggle for power, which has escalated completely, is a tragedy. By focusing on themselves rather than protecting animals, the association’s top management is damaging STS’s most important asset: its credibility. This is especially bad as the donation-funded association depends on goodwill.

President Rukh’s camp highlights that animal welfare, led by a business economist and banker at Credit Suisse, in office since November 2021, has received more donations than ever before. But this is not enough. Quarrels end up scaring off donors. STS management should seriously look into the abuses denounced by critics. Otherwise, the image of animal welfare risks being permanently undermined by selfishness and personal strife.
