Apple’s executive floor will be on the big stage next Monday. As part of the annual developer conference WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference), the technology group will present its innovations during a keynote.
Experts are expecting a real product firework this year: Not just new versions of iOS, macOS, iPadOS and WatchOS operating systems, but new hardware as well. While experts are waiting for new Macs, they are also waiting for an entirely new product in the form of mixed reality glasses.
Blick explains what’s behind this and what the tech world can look forward to.
What’s Apple’s next revolution?
Apple’s “next big thing” could be nothing more than the start of the era after the iPhone and iPad. Specifically, it’s about a mixed reality title that is expected to revolutionize the industry. With its own operating system, entirely new apps, new ways to consume movies or sporting events, Apple is stepping up to revolutionize the entertainment industry. Will it work? Open.
Initially, the product was supposed to be available a year ago, but delays in development made it impossible to launch before 2023. There have been rumors for years that Apple is planning the next big thing. There were repeated rumors about new glasses that did not materialize. But now that the leaks are intensifying, even insider experts are sure: the time will come next Monday.
How are the glasses?
According to a recent report by Macrumors, the headset should resemble Facebook Oculus glasses. According to Leaks, they should have similarities with ski goggles. However, Apple’s device is said to be thinner and lighter than other products on the market. The battery should also not be inside the glasses. Instead, Apple wants to use an external hip-mounted battery. This is to provide better wearing comfort and a longer wearing life for the glasses.
With two high-resolution 4K displays, users should experience extremely sharp images. More than a dozen cameras track hand movements and gestures. To control the glasses, eye tracking sensors are installed, as well as voice control and spatial recognition sensors.
Apple also doesn’t want to rely on a password or PIN when using the glasses. Instead, an iris scanner will be used that can identify and precisely assign the user’s eye pattern. Similar products do not yet have such a function – it will be a new level in terms of security.
By the way, it is not clear what the glasses should be called. However, Apple has retained the “Reality Pro” and “Reality One” names in the past. However, the glasses do not have to carry one of these names.
What can glasses do?
Apple’s glasses should offer a mix of virtual reality and augmented reality. With the first, you are in a purely virtual environment – in video games, for example. In the latter case, what is available in the real world is digitally complemented. Apple now wants to try to combine the best of both worlds.
Exactly how this should work is still unclear. Apple expert Marc Gurman writes on his “Bloomberg” blog, citing several internal resources, that there are clear guidelines for app developers on how glasses can be used. The week-long developer conference WWDC is expected to revolve around glasses.
According to Macrumors, use of the headset should initially be limited to games, video streaming and video conferencing. It should also be possible to consume sporting events in some form of virtual reality.
It should have its own app store and its own operating system named “xrOS”. The glasses will be controlled via a user interface similar to that on the iPhone – only in virtual reality.
What are the glasses for?
Apple has been entering the entertainment market for some time now, securing the broadcast rights to the US soccer league MLS and baseball league MLB, among other things. The technology giant also produces its own movies and series under the name “Apple TV Plus”.
The Californian tech giant should now try to create a new world for consumers with a mixed reality headset. For example, at sporting events, an almost stadium-like experience can be created with an all-round view, realistic background noise, and the option to view the graphics for the game or the results of other games. That’s why Apple wants to secure a bigger piece of the entertainment pie.
New fitness functions, close-up video conferencing or gaming in an almost real environment should also encourage consumers to buy the glasses.
What are the disadvantages?
According to the leaks, two disadvantages stand out in particular: The glasses should not be transparent. There should be extroverted screens that can show graphics to people around. However, the device should not be used like normal clear glasses. Glasses were almost never used in everyday life.
Also, as with all tech revolutions, the headset is likely to be really expensive, at least initially. Loud «Macromor» glasses should cost about 3000 francs. The first version of the device is aimed primarily at professionals and developers.
However, according to the portal, Apple is working on a second version of the headset. That should be significantly cheaper and more in the price range of a new iPhone, due to the installation of cheaper components. However, analysts think that such a device will not be on the market before 2024 or 2025.
Even the first, expensive generation of Apple glasses shouldn’t appear soon after next Monday’s presentation. According to experts, the first headphones should not go on sale until autumn or even winter.
Do I have to buy the device?
If you don’t work in the tech world and are already regularly involved in AR or VR, you probably won’t need Apple glasses to get started. Expert Gürman writes that Apple does not expect millions of sales. Senior Apple employees assume that the first generation of the device will only sell slowly.
Over time and at cheaper prices, the glasses should eventually have the potential to completely replace the iPhone or iPad. This looks ambitious and has attracted critics to the plan, especially in recent weeks. But that already existed when the iPhone was released in 2007 and 2008.
Insiders are assuming that the glasses will be available more on Monday as a concept for developers – you’ll likely be able to buy them later in the year.
