There will likely be layoffs at Credit Suisse soon – but the search for staff is still ongoing. (archive image)

Considering it’s almost dying, it seems somewhat ironic that Credit Suisse is promoting itself as a promising employer on its website. We offer our employees long-term career opportunities in an international environment, with attractive fields of activity, progressive working conditions and a wide range of training and development opportunities.

Still: both major banks are currently looking for staff, even as the eventual takeover of UBS and consequent layoffs are imminent.

People avoid CS

Credit Suisse has 130 vacancies in Switzerland alone. This is demonstrated by Indeed’s review of job postings on various banking websites, the job portal for the AWP news agency. Job postings in CS even include jobs with management responsibility.

Despite the upcoming takeover, CS’s staffing search is likely to have something to do with the large number of employee layoffs during the discussions in recent months. Because until the two banks merge legally and operationally, the bank has to continue as before. And this is not possible without employees.

Demanded IT professionals

Meanwhile, UBS is looking for staff: There are currently 234 vacancies at the bank, according to an analysis by job portal Indeed. Not surprisingly, there is a demand for IT professionals in particular. Because these are often scarce in the labor market, and bank mergers are a Herculean task, especially in the IT sector.

In the medium term, however, layoffs are expected at the combined UBS and Credit Suisse. Media reports estimate that the newly merged bank will lose up to 30,000 jobs worldwide compared to today, of which 11,000 will be in Switzerland. There are no official figures yet.

By the end of 2022, the two banks together had 123,000 full-time equivalents worldwide. According to the latest figures, about 21,000 employees at UBS in Switzerland and about 11,000 at Credit Suisse are on the payroll.

Raiffeisen and ZKB busy with recruiting

Good news for worried CS workers: There are many vacancies in the industry right now. According to the job portal Indeed, the ten largest banks and banking groups in Switzerland currently have more than 950 vacancies. In addition, there are positions at many small banks and jobs that are never advertised but filled with the help of personnel service providers.

After UBS and Credit Suisse, Raiffeisen has the most vacancies. Indeed counted 140 job postings in the jointly organized banking group. Zürcher Kantonalbank also posted about 130 job postings – including postings for about a dozen internship positions.

There are about 40 vacancies each at Postfinance and Migros Bank – these two institutions are specifically looking for IT professionals. Private banks also have vacancies: Julius Baer has over 80 vacancies, Pictet and Lombard Odier have about 60, and Vontobel 40. (SDA/sfa)
