Couples should carefully adjust them.

Pension fund, special provisions, inheritance agreement, alimony, protection in case of death… unmarried couples have to arrange a lot.

Little cousin is visiting. Matchbox cars, Schleich animals and Lego Duplo are dragged into the living room to keep the sweet three-year-old entertained. The noise level and chaos increase linearly when suddenly some inconsistency spooks the smallest: “Aren’t Uncle Johannes and Julia married?!”

Yes like that. 14 percent of women and men who have children together in Switzerland live together without a marriage license.

For childless couples, this number is significantly higher. There are many reasons not to get married – tax disadvantages for some, dislike for big family celebrations for others. In both cases, unmarried people have to arrange their coexistence.

Because unlike married couples, so-called cohabiting spouses are not protected by law. Of course, joint custody of children, rights to information and representation in case of accident or illness are important issues that should be defined by power of attorney and statutory decrees.

But as always, it’s also about money. So take off your rose-tinted glasses for a moment and create a checklist: pension fund, special provisions, inheritance agreement, maintenance, financial contribution to household expenses… A wedding guest list doesn’t compare to this! Women in particular should devote themselves to the subject with great care.

Especially if you decide to start a family in the traditional way, the father reduces the workload to take care of their children while the father continues his career. Unmarried women then live on thin ice. You have neither the right to inheritance nor the right to receive a widow’s pension. There isn’t enough room here for the financial problems that go hand in hand with a breakup.

None of this concerns the seven-year-old; What she wants to know is: “How can you have a baby if you’re not married?” “It’s good that you asked that. The babies thing is so exciting…» The older siblings rush out of the room.
