6.4 million citizens in Switzerland have a driver’s license. Approximately 600,000 driver’s licenses are produced each year in credit card format. Now there is a new design. Blue is the date. Pink dominates! Anyone who orders a driver’s license from the road traffic office in their canton after 15 April 2023 will receive their driver’s license by mail in a few days later in the latest generation credit card format. The data in the new identity remains unchanged. On the other hand, the new design meets the highest international and European standards for ID card security as stated in the statement.
These are the most important security features:
- The material of the new driver’s license is made of polycarbonate (like an identity card). Personalized data is applied to the ID card using a laser engraving process.
- If you run your fingers over the card, you can feel how some of the security elements are detached from the smooth surface.
- A slanted image can be seen on the front of the ID card, showing the card issuer or the date of birth of the ID card holder, depending on the point of view.
- • There is a different colored cross on the back of the license depending on the viewing angle. Now the back of the ID card is laser engraved with a QR code containing certain personal data that can be read with a smartphone and can also be seen on the front.
What happens to previous licenses?
The old driver’s license in credit card format (FAK) has been around for 20 years. It is still valid without restriction. If new or additional data (eg glasses entry or newly acquired category) is entered, a new driver’s license is required as before. From April 15, 2023, anyone who voluntarily wishes to obtain a new driver’s license will be able to change their old driver’s license at the road traffic office in their canton of residence.
The new driver’s license fee is regulated by the canton, but will not be adjusted due to the modernization of the driver’s license. But watch out! Anyone who still has an antique blue paper driver’s license will soon have to replace it. From 2024, the blue driver’s license will no longer be valid.
