The average effective corporate tax burden of all cantons fell from 14.69 percent to 14.60 percent in annual comparison, according to an assessment by consulting firm PWC on Monday.

In the study, the current tax rates and bases in the cantonal capitals were examined. The cantonal capitals Bern (21.04%), Zurich (19.65%) and Ticino (19.16%) have the highest tax companies. The three most tax-efficient cantonal capitals for legal entities are Zug (11.80%), Nidwalden (11.97%) and Lucerne (12.15%). The notice highlights that companies can also claim deductions from research costs, patent box deductions and – in the canton of Zurich – from net equity.

According to the study, low-tax cantons rank high in the European comparison. In this context, the canton of Zug ranks third after Hungary (9.00%) and Bulgaria (10.00%). High-tax cantons with almost twice the tax burden would be in the upper middle range in an EU comparison. A similar picture emerges when taxes are compared with OECD countries and G20 countries. Here the high-tax canton of Bern ranks 15th in the upper midfield.

There are still huge differences in income taxation. According to the information given, tax rates vary greatly from canton to canton and from municipality to municipality. Annual income of CHF 100,000 for a single person is taxed in Zug at 11.92 percent, the lowest rate among all cantonal capitals. The tax burden is 23.87 percent, the highest in Neuchâtel, twice that of Zug.
