Goodbye Matterhorn! The most famous Swiss mountain has graced the packaging of a Swiss icon for decades: Toblerone. But this will end soon. From July, the sweet chocolate triangle will no longer be produced exclusively in Switzerland.
It has been known since June 2022 that the Mondelez Group, which produces Toblerone today, will partially produce the famous chocolate in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. From autumn, smaller Toblerone products in 35 gram and 50 gram formats will be produced in Bratislava.
The reason for this is that the chocolate factory in Bern-Brünnen has reached its capacity limits. But the place of manufacture will remain. Classic 100 gram chocolates are still made in Switzerland. Even the Bern site is being expanded. The group wants to be able to produce 90 million 100 grams of additional chocolate per year.
No longer “Made in Switzerland”
As the “Aargauer Zeitung” states, Toblerone chocolate will no longer be allowed to bear the “Made in Switzerland” logo due to production abroad. The brand suffix “Switzerland” under Toblerone will be changed to “Incorporated in Switzerland”. And the Matterhorn, with the bear hidden in its packaging, has to go.
National symbols such as the Matterhorn, Wilhelm Tell and the Swiss cross are not allowed on the packaging of products that do not meet the Swiss criteria introduced in 2017.
Toblerone packaging is now being redesigned. Mondelez wants to use a “modernized and modernized mountain logo” that is “consistent with the geometric and triangular aesthetic.” (rae/pbe)
