Strange news has been coming through Whatsapp for some time: companies advertise with lucrative side jobs. But it wasn’t just the content that was strange: An infobox inside the chat window indicates that the chat’s security is managed by Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp.

There is «Whatsapp Business» for companies. This version of Whatsapp aims to serve companies and their marketing purposes: For inquiries regarding product range, products and opening hours, this version of the app provides a direct line in chat form between customers and companies.
However, it is also possible for potential victims to trust the content, at least because of the infobox.
For attorney Martin Steiger (44) this is a Fraud attempt especially as unwanted advertisements via Whatsapp are not legal.
It’s unlikely that Meta will handle user data like this: “You can’t get around that with terms and conditions either.” But how did the senders get their phone number?
Phone numbers on the dark web
In November, the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC) warned that, among other things, user data from 1.5 million Swiss was tapped on Meta and then crashed into the dark web.
“As a result of this report, we have drawn attention to potential unsolicited contacts,” the FDPIC writes on request.
“FDPIC generally recommends paying attention to chat messages from unknown senders. Especially not clicking on the links they contain. If the sender is not trustworthy, the message should be deleted and ideally the number blocked»
