More damage during the World Cup

Hundreds of thousands of Swiss sit in front of television when the national team plays at the World Cup in Qatar. Swiss games have record values. Also on mobile devices. This seems to be inspiring. Because a third damage occurs in connection with football in European and world championships. This was demonstrated by evaluating Axa’s damage stats.

So after the game, straight from the couch to the soccer field or garage area to play some soccer? This is what you might think when you look at Axa’s data. The insurance company compared the damage reported to it for June and July between 2010 and 2021 – more than 500 cases in total. The trend is clear: in years when a European Championship or World Cup is held, the frequency of damage increases by 33 percent.

Average damage of 650 francs

“Great tournaments not only increase viewership ratings and sales of fan articles, but also create the desire to test one’s own ball skills,” says Reto Leibundgut. He is the Head of Claims Liability at AXA.

According to the insurance company, most of the damage was football-related during the 2016 European Championship, more than double that of the comparative 2015 or 2020 season. The damage cost Axa an average of 650 francs.

Smashed TVs

Classic: A kid imitates Messi, Ronaldo or Freuler – but doesn’t seem to have the same skills yet. Accidentally throws the skin on the window, car, or neighbor’s blinds. Parents’ private liability insurance covers the expenses incurred – from the deductible.

“But we also encounter more interesting events,” Leibundgut says. For example, a customer jumped into his mother’s chair with great enthusiasm during a football game. And I damaged the suspension. In another case, a customer got so angry when Switzerland missed a penalty against Spain that he threw an object at his colleague’s television, damaging the set. (be)
