Tech billionaire Elon Musk is starting to make his mark on the online service after taking over Twitter. He wants to create a new body to deal with controversial content, among other things. Before such a council meets, there will be no major decisions on content policy or account recovery, he wrote on Twitter. For this reason, the account of former President Donald Trump, which Musk has discussed in the past months, should not be expected to be opened immediately.
According to media reports, layoffs on Twitter should be initiated as soon as possible. Finance service Bloomberg wrote that it brought software developers from the electric car manufacturer Musk headed to Twitter headquarters to review the platform’s program code. Business Insider reports that Musk appears in internal profiles titled CEO. It was previously reported that he wanted to take on the mission in addition to his best job at Tesla and space company SpaceX, among others.
280 character limit can be removed
At the same time, Musk promised via tweet over the weekend: “Anyone blocked for minor and questionable reasons will be released from Twitter jail.” It was also open to removing the 280 character limit for tweets. He also thought it would be a good idea for users to be able to choose between different versions of the service: “Like the age rating in movies.”
Musk completed its $44 billion acquisition of the online service on Thursday. Since then, there has been little official information about what happened on Twitter. The dismissal of senior executives around the previous boss, Parag Agrawal, was initially only known through media reports. Musk has yet to give details about his plans for Twitter’s future. It could go like this: With the acquisition, Musk buys Twitter from the stock market and no longer has to report on the development of the business.
50,000 racist tweets after the takeover
Musk has often criticized Twitter for restricting freedom of expression too much. This has raised concerns that Twitter may have more hate and hate speech under its control. The formation of the Content Council may now signal a more cautious trajectory.
Observers noticed an increase in tweets containing racially hate speech following the completion of the Twitter takeover. According to Twitter, around 50,000 such tweets came from only 300 accounts and they are fighting it.
Musk doesn’t want users banned
Elon Musk also has a clear view on blocking users. An example is Donald Trump: While still President on January 6, 2021, he praised his supporters for storming the Capitol in Washington. As a result, he was blocked from Twitter and Facebook. His own Twitter copy is now active on Truth Social, but has a much smaller reach there.
Trump reiterated that he won’t be returning to Twitter even if it’s possible over the weekend. He will instead stay on Truth Social, Trump told Fox News Digital. “I like it here better,” he explained. “I love Elon, but I’m attached to the Truth.” It also restrained: “I don’t think Twitter could have succeeded without me.” In fact, things haven’t gotten any worse for Twitter since its ban.
Trump is not returning to Twitter
Musk has criticized Trump’s permanent ban in May as “morally wrong and just plain stupid”. It also announced that it would generally lift “lifetime” bans on users.
Trump has also previously said that he would not return to Twitter, even if he could. Trump had more than 80 million followers on Twitter. Twitter copy of Truth Social is only a few million. If Trump decides to run for president in 2024, he could use a larger platform. (SDA/what)
