Android mobile phones from Google and Samsung already have numerous artificial intelligence (AI)-related functions. Such AI features are still well hidden on the iPhone. But that’s about to change. Apple’s CEO Tim Cook (63) promised to make big announcements about artificial intelligence this year.

But these may turn out differently than most people think. Bloomberg reported that Apple and Google are in talks to integrate Google’s Gemini AI engine into the iPhone. With the “arch-enemy” of all humans. This would be an explosion in the world of technology.

Potential billion dollar deal

Discussions will be about licensing the model for productive AI functions. According to the report, these will be integrated into iPhone software iOS this year. Not only that: An unnamed source reports that Apple has also recently spoken with OpenAI and is considering using their model.

According to Bloomberg, a deal between Apple and Google would be based on a search engine partnership. For several years now, Google has been paying Apple billions of dollars a year to make Google Search the default in Apple’s Safari browser. The parties have not yet agreed on the exact terms or branding of a potential AI partnership, an insider said.

Apple’s own artificial intelligence projects

Apple has also been working on its own language model since 2023. The project will be run under the code name Ajax. Some Apple employees are said to use a chatbot called AppleGPT internally. However, the report states that artificial intelligence tools are inferior to competing tools. According to media reports, Apple recently discontinued the car project after nearly a decade. It was also said that some of the affected software developers should be working on artificial intelligence programs instead.

Samsung introduced the S24 series in January. In addition to the manufacturer’s own artificial intelligence model, Google’s Gemini model is also used in the mobile phone. So this will be another prestigious deal for Google. Because Apple has more than two billion active devices. This includes iPhones, iPads, Macs and more. Neither Apple nor Google declined to comment to Bloomberg.

Tim Cook is a ChatGPT fan

Cook said last year that he personally uses OpenAI’s ChatGPT. However, he also pointed out that artificial intelligence still has problems that need to be solved. He talked about bias and disinformation, among other things. By outsourcing productive AI, Apple will partially take itself out of the line of fire.

Last month there was a controversy surrounding the sign of Gemini. Users complained that the Gemini bot produced images that showed historically inaccurate representations of gender and ethnicity. For example, a black man wearing a Nazi uniform or a Viking with Asian facial features was depicted. Google later paused image production with Gemini and apologized.
