Current figures from the Swiss Job Index show a rapid increase in freelance positions. There was a 23 percent increase in such employment contracts in the first two months of the year alone. Temporary and fixed term positions also increased by 8 percent in January and February. However, classic permanent positions and fixed-term contracts with the same expectation fell by 2 percent and 3 percent, respectively.
The total number of positions advertised in Switzerland fell by 1 percent over the same period. However, according to the statement, this number increased by 3 percent compared to the previous year. Currently, about 10 percent of advertised positions are some form of temporary employment.
Companies want to protect themselves
Page Group Switzerland General Manager Yannick Coulange says the following about the results: “Increasing economic and geopolitical risks have made employers and candidates more cautious. Freelancing and fixed-term contracts are seen as a way to manage these business risks.”
At the same time, many employers have increased their hiring requirements, resulting in hiring processes for permanent positions taking longer. Temporary positions do not require the same high standards and offer flexibility to applicants. Many of these temporary positions are also converted into permanent positions.
Young people want to be independent
The increase in less committed forms of employment also reflects another development: Loyalty to the employer is decreasing and openness to new opportunities is increasing. Many professionals see advantages of temporary employment in terms of their professional development and work-life balance.
Job hopping is on the rise, especially among younger workers. They are jumping from task to task and also changing companies more frequently.
The staffing service provider suspects that, given the ongoing geopolitical and economic uncertainties, the labor market will continue to follow this trend and the number of temporary employment types will also increase.
