French President Emmanuel Macron.

French President Emmanuel Macron (46) announced the draft law on euthanasia. As Macron told the newspapers “La Croix” and “Libération” on Sunday, active euthanasia should be allowed under strict conditions. Therefore, the draft law should be submitted to the Council of Ministers in April and the Turkish Grand National Assembly should discuss the plans in the first reading in May.

As Macron said, terminally ill adults whose suffering can no longer be alleviated in the final stages of the disease will be able to “ask for help to die” in the future. Another requirement must be that the person concerned has full discretion: in France, minors and patients with mental illnesses or Alzheimer’s disease should not be able to use euthanasia.

Active euthanasia proposal rejected in 2021

If all the requirements are met, a lethal drug should be able to be prescribed to the person who wishes to die; The patient can take this independently or with the help of a third party if he can no longer do it on his own.

Active euthanasia is currently prohibited in France. Legal regulations have been revised many times in the last twenty years. Since 2002, patients have had the right to refuse treatment. In 2005, it was decided that doctors could allow a terminally ill patient to die by stopping life-prolonging treatment at the patient’s request.

This law was last amended in 2016. Since then, doctors have been allowed to give terminally ill patients powerful painkillers that can hasten death. The bill that would enable active euthanasia was last rejected in 2021. (AFP)
